About Tekijuku
During Japan's isolation period, the Dutch trading post in Nagasaki's Dejima served as the only window to the Western world. Therefore, Dutch was considered the most important international language for learning Western science, particularly medicine. Many Japanese scholars studied Dutch in Nagasaki and established research centers for Dutch studies in Japan. Among them, Tekijuku, founded by the prominent Dutch physician Koan Ogata, was known for its research in Western medicine, including significant achievements in vaccination and cholera treatment. Tekijuku later became one of the foundations for the establishment of Osaka University, one of Japan's most important universities. Designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1964, Tekijuku is the only remaining structure of its kind in Japan, and this signing ceremony was held with the cooperation of Osaka University, which traces its spiritual roots to Tekijuku.
